Padel Viber groups in Lithuania

Lithuanian padel lives on Viber. Not in booking systems and not on social media, but in chat groups where a fourth player is found every evening, cancelled courts are passed on within minutes, and tournament pairs are agreed. Everyone in the sport knows this; nobody had measured it. This report is an attempt to size that informal infrastructure: how many groups exist, how big they are, and where in the country they are missing.

The snapshot

One number here needs care. 58,055 is memberships, not people. An active player in Vilnius typically sits in three or four club groups at once and is therefore counted several times over. The real number of unique players is considerably lower — but memberships are the right measure for the question that matters: how many times a day the message “need a fourth” reaches a phone.

The second thing worth knowing before reading the tables: 3 of the 33 groups belong to no club at all. They are player-run communities — “Padelis Vilniuje”, “Padelis Nida” and the Fabijoniškės courts group — and one of them is the eleventh largest group in the country. The community grows in places where no club organises it.

Groups by city

Memberships are distributed roughly like courts: the three biggest cities hold 89% of the country's total. The proportions do not match, though — Klaipėda is nearly 1.4× ahead of Kaunas here, while having only 23 more courts.

The table shows what the chart cannot: how many groups a single club runs. Vilnius has 13 groups across eleven clubs, Kaunas five across four. A club running more than one group usually splits them by purpose — one “general” room, one for a specific level or format.

Memberships per court is not a meaningful reading for the Klaipėda district and Ukmergė rows: a single club with three courts, or one, serves a far wider area than its court count suggests.

Every group, ranked

Six groups in the country have passed 3,000 members, and all six belong to clubs rather than communities. The largest is “Fanų Padelio Klubas” with 4,338 members — more people than every group in Šiauliai, Palanga, Alytus, Panevėžys and Ukmergė put together.

Where the people are

Group size is distributed very unevenly. The mean is 1,759 memberships but the median is lower (1,554), which always means the same thing: the top end is pulling the average up. For a player the practical consequence is that joining the 9 biggest groups already puts you in front of half the conversation in the country.

The other side of that is a long tail. Six clubs run groups under 500 members, and together they account for just 3.4% of all memberships. Finding a partner works differently in a small group: the message does not scroll away, but there are ten people who might answer it rather than a thousand.

The Klaipėda anomaly

Vilnius leads on absolute numbers, but the density of a padel community is better measured per resident. On that reading the top spot is nowhere near the capital.

Klaipėda has 90 padel chat memberships per 1,000 residents; Vilnius has 39 and Kaunas 35. The port city is not only the large city with the most courts per resident — it is the most densely connected padel community in the country.

At the other end sits Panevėžys: 22 courts in the city and a single group of 438. That is five memberships per 1,000 residents, eighteen times fewer than Klaipėda. More courts have been built there than the community has organised itself around, and it shows beyond the groups too — Panevėžys has the fewest memberships per court of anywhere in Lithuania.

Why Viber, not WhatsApp

Lithuania's padel community has effectively no platform question. Of the 33 groups, 32 run on Viber and exactly one on WhatsApp. That mirrors the country's general messaging habit, and for a club it reduces to a simple rule: put the group where the app is already installed on players' phones.

The one WhatsApp group is BSport Padel Club Vilnius (838 members). International clubs and mixed communities reach for WhatsApp more often, but in Lithuanian padel it is still the exception.

Which clubs have no group

The national registry holds 81 operating venues and 357 courts. 28 of them run a chat group — about a third. That figure is misleading on its own, because the clubs that run groups are the big ones: those 28 venues hold 200 courts, or 56% of the country's entire infrastructure.

The widest gaps are Palanga and Panevėžys. In Palanga one venue out of four runs a group, and it is the smallest of them: 2 courts out of 17. For a resort that is reasonable — its customers often arrive for a week and never form a community. Panevėžys makes less sense: 22 courts, four venues and one group of 438.

Four venues with nine or more courts carry no group in the registry: Fanų Padelio Arena (Plungės g.), Palangos padelis (Atostogų parkas), Beach Club “Smarūna” in Panevėžys and BSport Arena in Klaipėda. For two of them the reason is technical — Fanų and BSport each run several locations behind one shared group registered against another venue, which makes the second location look uncovered. Palangos padelis and “Smarūna” genuinely have none.

How to join — and what a group cannot do

Almost every club group is public: opening the invite link in the Viber app is enough, with no approval step. Some clubs gate groups by level, and then the link is only shown to players who match — not to be exclusive, but so a beginner does not land in a room where every evening's game is being arranged at a level well above theirs.

A group does one job extremely well: it spreads news fast. But it has three limits that a messaging app cannot cross in principle.

• The message disappears. In a large group an invitation scrolls away in minutes, so the slot goes not to the best-matched player but to whoever happened to pick up their phone.
• Nothing checks level. Everyone is equal in a chat room and nobody is equal on court. The result is that people mostly play the same familiar four, and newcomers find it hardest to get in.
• There is no state. The group does not know whether the court is still free or the fourth player has been found — that has to be asked, usually more than once.

So groups and a platform are not competitors; they solve different problems. Rallio's open games keep an invitation visible until the game starts, show venue, price and level, and merge every club's court schedule into a single view. The group keeps doing what nothing replaces — the club's voice, and the community's conversation.

For clubs: what these numbers mean

• The group is your largest channel. The median club group has 1,554 members — more than most Lithuanian padel clubs have followers on social media.
• A second group needs a purpose. Clubs running two split them by format or level; a second “general” room only halves the same audience.
• The link has to be findable. The biggest group in the club is worth nothing to a newcomer if its invite link only lives in last year's social post.

Methodology

Data aggregated on 17 August 2026 from the Rallio chat-group registry — public padel Viber and WhatsApp groups maintained by the clubs themselves or submitted by players. Only Lithuanian groups are included; the Liepāja (LV) group in the registry is excluded from every figure in this report.

Memberships, not people. “Members” is the member count the messaging app reports for the group at the time the registry was updated. A player can belong to several groups and is then counted several times, so 58,055 is a count of memberships, not of unique players. A group with no known member count would sort last rather than as zero — there are none in this report, all 33 carry a count.

City. The city a group serves. In one case that differs from the venue's registered city: “Padel Spot Vilnius” is assigned to Vilnius even though the club has a single registered venue in Klaipėda. Community groups with no club are assigned by the locality in their name.

Venues and courts. A cut of the Rallio arena registry taken the same day: 81 operating Lithuanian padel venues and 357 courts. Venues not yet open, and venues outside Lithuania, are excluded. Coverage is calculated at venue level, so a club with several locations and one shared group shows as “no group” at its other locations.

Population. Municipality resident figures from the State Enterprise Centre of Registers as of 3 January 2026. The ratio is per municipality rather than per city; localities without a comparable figure (Klaipėda district, Neringa, Ukmergė) are omitted from that chart.
